Somaliland culture
Somalia has only one language and it wasn't until recently that is became the offical language of the land. When greeting others they will shake hands but avoid shaking the hand of the oppsite sex. Somalians celebrate DABSHID. This is celebrated mainly in the south and it is the annual fire burning festival. The local people make a huge fire and dance around it.
These people mainly eat meat for main dishes and veggies are a main side. It's rare to see a vegetarian. During Ramadan anyone healthy thats older than 15 is required to fast during the nine month period.
For clothing, men wear western pants and shirts, flowing plaid ma'awis or shawls. They will usual wrap a colorful turban on their head or wear a koofiyad (embroided cap). Women will wear a Direh (a long, billowing dress worn over petticoats), coantino (a four-yard cloth tied over shoulder and draped around the waist),or a toob, which is commonly worn throughout Africa. They will also wear Hijabs, and head scarfs.

History
In the 19th century Somalia was was ruled by the British, Italian,and the French. The British came in 1884-1886. In the 1860's, France got part of Somalia. Italy came in 1889. The Italians tried to invade the Britain territory, but the British came back and took all the land between the two. The French Somaliland became Djibouti. Somalia became independent in 1960. The 1990's were bad times for Somalians. In 1992 the worst African drought was during the Somalian civil war. By 1997, they were effected by many horrible floods. Because of the civil war, the government there was unstable and it remained that way till the late 1990's. Somalia was affected by the tsunami in Dec., 2004. As a result of the unstable government, there has been many violent fights and terroristic doings. To this day many have lost their lives because of the rebels; it an on going fight in Somalia.
